Highlights from this episode of American Catholic Radio include:
Saint of the Day
John Henry Newman’s cause for canonization is still in process, but he has earned a place in our series of those who came to faith later in life. In fact, his conversion was big news at the time it occurred.
Living Faith
Mary Peterson is one of the co-founders of Maggie’s Place in Phoenix, Arizona, an intentional community of volunteers that serves expectant women in need of a loving atmosphere during their pregnancy and up to nine months after giving birth.
Ask a Franciscan
Franciscan scripture scholar Father Hilarion Kistner responds to e-mailed questions: Why did God wait so many centuries to send Jesus to us? Why didn’t God allow Moses to enter the Promised Land? Why did Jesus send demons into a herd of swine? In Jesus’ time were months and years counted the same way as they are now? Does the Bible oblige us to obey all civil authority?
Minute Meditation
This program’s Minute Meditation is from Well Lived: Stories of Wisdom and Wonder by Ursuline Sister Bridget Haase.
Bible Break
At the Easter Vigil, we hear the familiar story of creation proclaimed in the Liturgy of the Word. Using the pattern of seven days, the scriptures show God working carefully to create an orderly array of the heavens and the earth, and the creatures of the earth—including man and woman. Then, Genesis tells us, God rested. From this simple description comes the Jewish concept of the Sabbath, something we Catholics have kept in our tradition as well—a day of rest and worship. Author Kimberly Hahn explores the meaning behind the Sabbath.
Exploring Our Faith
Jeanne Hunt is a veteran religious educator on the parish and diocesan level. She also has preached parish missions with Isaiah Ministries throughout the world, eventually serving as its executive director. Jeanne currently serves as catechetical consultant for us here at St. Anthony Messenger Press, and her part-time work as a parish director of religious education keeps her in close touch with what real-life Catholics are thinking. She joins producer John Feister to talk about Mother's Day and how it relates to our faith.
