Exploring Our Faith For Catholics, a visit to the nation's capital, Washington, D.C., would not be complete without a visit to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It's the largest Catholic church in the U. S. and North America, and one of the ten largest in the world. Fifty years ago, the basilica was dedicated to the patroness of the U. S.—the Blessed Virgin Mary—under her title of the Immaculate Conception. Monsignor Walter Rossi, a priest from the Diocese of Scranton, who's served at the Basilica of the National Shrine since 1997, and since 2005 has been its rector, discusses the significance of this great shrine.
