Mt. 10:24-33

Jesus continues to tell the apostles what their proclamation of the kingdom involves. Their message will not always be gratefully received. Now He tells them that proclaiming the kingdom will be downright dangerous. Jesus will suffer for the kingdom and so will His disciples.

Yet danger and fear and hostility should not be the determining elements of the disciples’ ministry. Just as Jesus will survive the persecution that He must endure, so also will His disciples. The smallest detail of their lives will be under His protection. He assures them that they do not need to be afraid of anything.

The message of the kingdom still elicits hostility today. And Jesus still promises us His protection. We don’t need to be afraid of anything, either.

Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk, the eighth ordinary of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, is a nationally prominent churchman, educator and author of popular books about Catholic themes.

He was born in Dayton, Ohio, on August 12, 1934. After studies at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, he was ordained a priest on December 20, 1959. His ordination as bishop in 1974 and installation as archbishop in 1982 also were on December 20.

In addition to a doctorate in sacred theology from Pontifical Urban University (1961), Archbishop Pilarczyk holds an M.A. in classics from Xavier University in Cincinnati (1965) and a Ph.D. in classics from the University of Cincinnati (1969).

Archbishop Pilarczyk has written more than a dozen popular books and many pamphlets and articles. His best selling book is Twelve Tough Issues – And More. His most recent are When God Speaks and Live Letters.
